Learning the 12 bar blues progression is a vital part of playing the blues guitar. It underpins many of the riffs we want to play on guitar, not just in blues music but in lots of other styles of popular music, such as soul and rock.

There are plenty of variations on the 12 bar blues sequence, but the most basic form is an I-IV-V chord progression. As an example, let's look at the key of A, which allows you to play a 12 bar pattern just using open chords. We'll use dominant 7th major chords, as they give a classic bluesy tone, so the three chords you'll need for the I-IV-V pattern are A7-D7-E7.

I-I-I-I-IV-IV-I-I-V-IV-I-I is the pattern of the 12 bar progression.

A7-A7-A7-A7-D7-D7-A7-A7-E7-D7-A7-A7 is the chord sequence in A.

This 12 bar progression can be played simply, with four beats to the bar. Use downstrokes initially, then you can start to change this rhythm around as you get confident with the pattern.

Even if you're not consciously listening for it, this 12 bar rhythm is rolling along underneath, like a heartbeat, solid and repetitive, while the tune unfolds over it.

Tab is a simple and easy way to learn to play guitar songs, and blues tabs are a great way for learning to play the blues on guitar. Tablature is an easy to understand method of musical notation, frequently used for writing out music for the guitar and other fretted musical instruments.

The primary benefit of tab is that it shows a graphical depiction of the guitar neck illustrating where the notes are played. This makes it extremely quick to visualize and play them on the guitar neck as you read the tab. You can learn to read blues guitar tabs very simply, and master songs on guitar without needing to spend a lot of time learning to read music.

Tab shows you exactly on which string and at which fret to play a note , which is very useful as many notes can be played in a number of different positions on the guitar fretboard. So using tablature can take the guesswork out of deciding where you should play your guitar licks. This may not be shown in standard musical notation for guitar players, although sometimes the frets may be given by placing roman numerals below the music staff.
