Learning new things is great: it keeps your mind young, your attention sharp and it gives you something fun to do. Some people prefer to concentrate on more theoretical stuff, like a foreign language or a certain technical skill. Others, however, are inclined towards artistic domains, such as learning to play an instrument. If you, too, are interested in this area, know that the guitar is one of the most popular choices for people all over the world.

1. Practice really does make perfect. It might sound old, and you might have heard it tons of times before, but the truth is that the only way in which you can become a better musician is by practicing. This means that you will need to set apart a few hours every day, for as long as possible and repeat the same chords until you know them by heart and until you feel perfectly comfortable playing them.

2. It's also very important not to lose your focus or your drive, because these are both things that will influence your success in the future. Of course, there will be times where you will feel like you're not getting anywhere, but you shouldn't quit, at least not until you make some real efforts.

3. Learn the basics. Many people make the error of trying to learn complicated elements before they master the basics. This can be extremely dangerous, because not only will it set you up for failure, you will get even more discouraged when you see that things aren't going as planned. Instead, spend some time learning the beginner stuff, and only then go further.

4. You should try and meet more musicians and build relations based on your common passion. This way, when you are in need of advice or just want to complain, you will have people around you who know exactly what you mean and will even be able to help you with some good advice if necessary. Look for people with more experience than you, from whom you can learn new things, but also ones that you can help with your experience.

5. Buy your own equipment. This might seem obvious, but there are many people who think they can learn how to play it by practicing on friends' instruments. In fact, in order for you to be able to practice as much and as often as necessary, you need to own the right equipment, like a guitar and some guitar effects pedals. This way, you won't have to depend on anyone else and you will have everything you need in order to become the musician you want to be.
