Famous electric guitar players, several variants of rock music, the distinct sounds of blues, maybe one or two ore jazzy tunes but not musical theatre will be on your mind when you buy your first guitar effects pedal. You don't really see the two as being related, yet they are...

Three combined channels typically used as an integrated whole, namely speech, dance and songs are used in transmitting the story and the emotional charge of the piece in musical theatre. Most such pieces were written specifically for stage and rewritten for the screen only afterward, but no filmed musical could ever compete with the more popular Broadway and West End staged productions.

Rock musical there and rock opera have often been confused. The differences are significant, even if sometimes composers are attracted to both. Speech comes first, dance comes next and music only after that, when musicals are concerned since they are a form of theatre. Singing is the only really important performing channel in an opera. Musicals and contemporary popular operas require different kinds of scores from their composers, more elaborate in the case of opera and more on the popular side when it comes to musical theatre.

The opera performer is a singer who sometimes would dance and employ elements of acting, while the musical theatre performer is an actor who can dance and who would sing. A number of such performers have all the three expected skills equally developed. No sacrifice of their acting and dancing efforts for the sake of their singing is expected from these performers on stage. Rather, their singing voices are amplified in contemporary staging practices, while in the case of opera such an understanding of production would be turned down. The various backing modalities which support musical theatre performances emerge from this peculiar situation.

A whole range of orchestration techniques has to be used, with efficiency being the only decisive factor whenever changes of the performing team en route bring serious variations. Reinforcement systems and added instruments are among the all-time classics and arrangers are asked to restore the amplified parts in case of more complex additions. Pre-recorded music can also serve to reinforce sound, as well as synthesizers or modern custom MIDI controllers. Old school plus fabric curtains as architectural modifications meant to reduce unwanted reverberation are not left out, just like the more modern acrylic glass walls which reduce the volume of... electric guitar amplifiers, for instance. Our brief history is completed with your guitar effects pedal at this point. For musicals thrive again and the people who work for a complex traveling show of musical theatre are refined musicians to whom no effect is too obsolete, or too recent. If your sound can be changed by a modulation, you must know everything about to be included in such a team.
