The following are just a few guidelines that just could steer your playing in a more productive direction.

First off you need to simply have faith in in yourself and start to visualize yourself performing at the level you actually want to attain, absorb yourself in discovering new skills, improve on your song composition, theory and improvising expertise at every opportunity. Believing totally in yourself is crucial, for those who do not then you are more likely to fail.

You should take some time to see yourself playing incredibly well and winning the credit and admiration you realize you deserve for all the time and effort that's been put in for so long. I am certain that having a good self image and optimistic view of the future are key points to becoming a success in any line of business.

So is envisaging yourself playing superbly having put in all the necessary work and effort.

You have to rely on in yourself and that you will rehearse, you will play with loads of other players, you will learn loads of new abilties and that you will achieve everything you set out to as you are simply never going to admit defeat. Cultivate the attitude of unstoppability and it will come to you in time.

Under no circumstances turn away on any opportunity to gain knowledge of relevant new methods and knowledge, keep on practising.

Strive to have as much fun as possible when practising.. When you are practising and you encounter a part that forces you to slow down or even stop and hesitate as it's so tricky to play, never simply skip over those parts, that's exactly the reason you are practising, TO IMPROVE!

You need to go note by note the tricky part over and over again at the slowest speed you can endure and concentrate on getting it note perfect before gradually speeding it up, metronomes are useful in these instances, then you will be able to play it at the normal tempo and then go on to the next challenging part that needs practice.
It is of great benefit to you to play with other musicians as often as you can, this will open up opportunities to learn from other more skilled and experienced musicians - ask questions, observe and be influenced by them.

You teach best what you most need to learn, so try to always be approachable for other players at a lower level of skill to learn from.

It is good to jam or perform with people who play other instruments as well, this will be a good influence on your general musicality.

It's a good idea to start getting lessons from a guitar tutor. Discuss the idea of setting targets or goals and how to get to those goals with your tutor, if you have one. Record your playing and keep to listen to later, you will be able to hear for yourself just how much you have improved over time. I also recommend that you start playing songs that you know over prerecorded backing tracks. They will help you to play more precisely and at the correct tempo, plus you will know the structure of the song better as a result.You will be forced to finish the song instead of just playing part of it. Try to be efficient in every aspect of your playing and practice, be aware of what you are good at and what you are not so good at, accept that you will never be good at everything and try to focus on the style of playing you really like the most and enjoy playing. You only have so much time to develop these skills and there is no way you will ever find the time to learn everything on any given subject, let alone every style of guitar playing so SPECIALIZE!

Take no notice of people who tell you in order to become a "well rounded musician" you have to learn as much as you can about EVERYTHING about guitar playing, this is rubbish and misleading. Let me dispell a popular myth -this popular and over used term "natural musician".. Just more garbage, I'm afraid. Sure, some people do have skills or abilities that others are not as good as, but it's all for nothing if you don't work at improving, constantly. there is simply no substitute for persistence and hard work, every great player knows that.

In Summary :

* Find yourself a superb guitar tutor
* Ensure goals are set and a route to achieve them is planned..
* Specialise
* Make practising the cornerstone of your working day
* Use backing tracks
* Play with lots of other musicians, Ask questions
* You teach best what you most need to learn
* Avoid thinking negatively
* See yourself in your mind's eye being the successful player you always wanted to be and accept it as your destiny
* Do Not even consider giving up, ever!

About the Author

As a keen guitarist himself, Mr Newcommen would strongly advise all beginner guitar players to get quality classical guitars from a respected company, and to have more than a few lessons to start with. Even more important, if you do consider music lessons, find them in your community. That is, if you are within Stoke, get guitar lessons in Stoke, it will cost less as there will be a smaller amount of traveling, and you will be encouraging your local musical network.
