A commentary about Oded Golan's trial on James ossuary
Golan's attorney should demand a related DNA analysis of the bones in James ossuary with the remains in the bone box of "Jesus son of Joseph" found in the Jesus family tomb. James Tabor claims that they could both come from the Talpiot burial cave.
Golan would probably have feared proving that the James ossuary comes from Talpiot in 1980. Because the James ossuary would then be covered by a 1979 Israeli law, that gives all archeological artifacts unearthed in Israel to the State.
Golan"s defense lawyer could demand a court order for comparative DNA tests of the James ossuary bones (that Golan reportedly has) with the "Jesus son of Jospeh" Talpiot bones. No private person could get permission for such a test in Israel, in my opinion. But a good lawyer assisted by renowned expert opinion could persuade a judge that this would be relevant, material evidence for defense. Because it could corroborate precisely what the purported FULL James ossuary inscription says, if the test proves these are siblings.
Trial on this case has closed , pending the judge's verdict. If the judge renders a defense verdict, that would officially mean that the prosecution couldn't prove forgery beyond reasonable doubt. The judge could elaborate on the evidence.
The James ossuary could best be authenticated by comparison of mitochondrial DNA to Jesus' Talpiot ossuary. Golan may not like pegging these bone boxes , because that may endanger his possession of the James ossuary. Still, money could change that. This matter may in the end corroborate Lincoln's observation "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."
Many learned about James' brotherhood to Jesus and about James' important role in early Christianity due to James ossuary. Three years before this ossuary surfaced in Jerusalem, an original novel "The Star of Apocalypse" was published, relating to him as a prominent leader and dead sea scrolls writer.
