If you'd like to become a web designer with the right credentials for today's employment market, you'll need to study Adobe Dreamweaver. The full Adobe Web Creative Suite should also be learned comprehensively. This will introduce you to Action Script and Flash, (and more), and could lead on to the Adobe Certified Professional or an Adobe Certified Expert certification.

In order to establish yourself as a full web professional however, there are other things to consider. You'll be required to have knowledge of some programming essentials like PHP, HTML, and MySQL. A practical knowledge of Search Engine Optimisation and E Commerce will give your CV some extra credibility and make you more employable.

Make sure that all your qualifications are what employers want - don't even consider studies which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you'd printed it yourself). The main industry leaders such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco each have nationally renowned proficiency programmes. These heavyweights can make sure you stand out at interview.

It can be a nerve-racking task, but landing your first job can be relieved by training colleges, through a Job Placement Assistance programme. The honest truth is that it isn't so complicated as you might think to secure a job - assuming you're well trained and qualified; the growing UK skills shortage sees to that.

Work on polishing up your CV right away however - look to your training company for advice on how to do this. Don't wait till you've finished your exams. You may not have got to the stage where you've got to the exam time when you land your first junior support position; however this can't and won't happen if your CV isn't in front of employers. Most often, a local IT focused recruitment consultancy - who make their money when they've found you a job - should get better results than any division of a training company. Also of course they should be familiar with the area and local employers better.

In a nutshell, if you put the same amount of effort into landing a job as into training, you won't find it too challenging. A number of trainees bizarrely put hundreds of hours into their training and studies and then just stop once qualified and appear to be under the impression that jobs will come to them.

A ridiculously large number of organisations only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and completely miss the reasons for getting there - which will always be getting the job or career you want. Your focus should start with where you want to get to - don't make the vehicle more important than the destination. Avoid becoming one of those unfortunate students who choose a training program that on the surface appears interesting - and end up with a certification for a job they hate.

You need to keep your eye on what you want to achieve, and then build your training requirements around that - not the other way round. Stay focused on the end-goal - making sure you're training for something you'll enjoy for years to come. It's worth seeking guidance from a professional who knows the commercial realities of the sector you're considering, and who can offer 'A day in the life of' synopsis of the job being considered. This is essential because you need to know if this change is right for you.
