You may know that utilizing binaural beats lets you to obtain different states of mind. This is done by "tuning" your brain into various frequencies. Once your brain is focused on these various frequencies, it's easier to achieve the state of mind you are looking for such as relaxation, positive thinking, increased memory, better focus, and more.
Over time, scientists have found that various frequencies can be associated with different states of mind. As an example, a frequency of 1 to 3 Hz (Hertz, or the number of changes per minute) may be related to deeper sleep. Binaural beats allow you to listen to a certain frequency to allow you to achieve different states of mind. And today (versus 150 years ago), it's easier to change your brainwave frequencies with simply a CD or MP3 player and headphones.
In order to get your brain to tune into a specific frequency, different sounds can be administered to each ear. In the case of binaural beats (there are also other beats called isochronic and monaural beats, but we'll use binaural for the discussion here), a tone is administered to in each ear. One tone may be 100 Hz, the other may be played at 108 Hz. This creates a binaural "beat" with the same frequency as the difference of the two (8 Hz). In this case, 8 Hz corresponds with the theta state of mind which is great for creating ideas.
The frequencies can be broken up into four categories, with each category targeting a different state of mind. The names of these frequencies may be very familiar to you, as they are frequently used when talking about other topics, but mostly when speaking of binaural beats. These frequencies are called theta, delta, alpha, and beta.
The first frequency range is within the 13 Hz to 25 Hz range and helps achieve a state of alertness and also helps reduce anxiety and stress. This is the range for beta frequencies.
The second frequency range would be the alpha frequencies. The alpha frequencies range from 8 to 12 Hz. When the binaural beat is played in this range, it produces "superlearning," positive thinking, as well as a state of light relaxation.
The third category is the theta frequencies. Frequencies in the theta range are from 4 to 7 Hz. This frequency range can result in increased focus, memory improvement, deep relaxation, and is great for meditation.
Delta frequencies occur at lower than 4 Hz. Deep, dreamless sleep, increased immune functions, lucid dreaming and losing awareness of your body can occur in this range.
As you can see, using binaural beats in the different ranges can create a huge number of mental states, resulting in a multitude of benefits for those who give them a try.
