You may have seen the documentary film "The Secret". The movie introduces a metaphysical belief called the law of attraction. Even if you haven't seen the film, you probably heard of the belief, as there are scores of books, DVDs, and seminars on the topic. It has even been much discussed on the Oprah show. You likely have at least a general idea of what the law of attraction is: visualize what you want, and take in all the positive feelings as if what you want has already came true. Supposedly, this law never fails, and is at work whether you are aware of it or not.
After watching "The Secret", you probably got excited, and even tried it yourself. Maybe you sat down and visualized landing that dream job, or finding Mr. or Miss Right. Maybe you did this a couple minutes once or twice a day. Perhaps you repeated some affirmations over and over. After doing this for a week or two, you realized nothing has changed. Whatever you were trying to attract has not manifested, and remains as ever an elusive dream. Does this mean that the law of attraction is nothing more than false hype or a scheme conjured up by the creators of "The Secret" to sell related books and DVDs?
The law of attraction can't exactly be scientifically proven, so any theories on it can only be subjective. I'll offer my two cents on what I think.
Do I believe the law of attraction is real? Yes, I do, but I believe the reason it fails for so many people is because their mind isn't disciplined enough to maintain the positive thoughts and feelings on a consistent basis. Just as you wouldn't to expect to master a sport or a musical instrument by just practicing 10 minutes a day, you shouldn't expect to manifest your dreams with just a couple minutes of visualization and monotonous repeats of affirmations.
To really manifest your desires, you have to feel with every cell in your body the feeling of achieving your dreams. Once you get that feeling, hold it inside and don't let it go. You have to embed that feeling into your subconscious. Have even a shred of doubt and you might just as well forget about it.
Our minds don't stop thinking. Unsupervised, it will run off in all directions, producing strings of random, unrelated thoughts. With a little conscious shift , we could get our minds thinking productive thoughts that will have the law of attraction working in our favor.
