It is worth considering that you are dealing with two different areas: People who have psychic experiences or gifts and the various methods or tools psychics may embrace.

Once you have chosen a psychic to speak with, there is one very important factor: How you feel about the psychic you contact. If you have a good feeling about the psychic and your connection with them then THAT is a good sign. If you are uncomfortable with the psychic, stop the reading immediately. It is so important that there is a good, positive connect between yourself and any psychic you work with.
